LONG AND LOW
We wished to create a long, linear journey, parallel to the shore, as our approach to the brief to provide a small cafe at the beach at Silecroft, Cumbria. The brief allowed for a small building with changing facilities.
Two main vistas were identified, one principally to the beach with another to the Black Combe fell behind. We were conscious about a slow yet dramatic reveal - encouraging patrons to traverse down a gentle ramp into the core of the building to reveal the beach. A chimney anchors the building at the corner, before a roof lantern springs up towards the black combe fell.
The journey to the shore is placed within an inner promenade, allowing one to hear the rumble of the surf, before spotting it with an icy blast of wind.
